MLB Trade Deadline 2026: Date, Rules & How to Track Every Move
The 2026 MLB trade deadline is Monday, August 3 at 6 p.m. ET. That's later than the traditional July 31 date — the Commissioner's Office can set the deadline anywhere between July 28 and August 3, and this year it lands on the back end. Two weeks out, the sell-off and buy-in decisions are being made right now.
Here's what the deadline actually means, the rules that changed, and how to follow every move live — with production data attached to every name.
The Rules, Quickly
It's a hard cutoff
Since 2019 there are no August waiver trades. When the clock hits 6 p.m. ET on August 3, trading is over — the only ways to add a player after that are free agency (players released or DFA'd and cut loose) and waiver claims. That finality is what drives the frenzy in the last 48 hours.
Postseason eligibility
Any player in the organization on August 31 is eligible for the postseason roster. Deadline pickups qualify easily — which is why contenders pay a premium in early August instead of waiting for the waiver wire.
What actually gets traded
Deals are players, players to be named later (PTBNL), and cash considerations. Draft picks can't be traded (with narrow exceptions like competitive-balance picks). Injured-list players can be dealt, but 40-man roster math shapes almost every deadline move: acquiring teams need the spot, selling teams often move a reliever precisely to open one.
How to Track Every Move Live
The Transactions page pulls every official MLB transaction in near real time — trades, call-ups, IL moves, DFAs, signings, options, releases. Two filters matter for deadline week:
- Trades only — the type filter cuts the feed to actual deals, so you're not scrolling past routine option moves while the deadline clock runs.
- Your team — the team dropdown filters to any of the 30 clubs, so you see your front office's moves the minute they're official.
It's free, no account, no ads. Player names link straight to profiles, so when your team acquires someone you half-know, the season and career production is one tap away.
Judge the Trade, Not the Names
Deadline deals get graded on reputation within minutes of breaking. Production is the better test. The Trade Analyzer takes any two sides of a deal and totals each package's NUT — the production score behind everything on this site — plus a rest-of-season projection per player, each with a letter grade. A rental reliever and a headline bat stop being abstractions; they become numbers you can compare on one screen.
For the names in rumors but not yet moved, the Player Tracker watches any list of players daily, and every team page shows whether a club's record is backed by real production — the difference between a buyer that should buy and one that's about to overpay. New to the metric? Start with what NUT measures.
Deadline Week Checklist
- Mark Monday, Aug 3, 6 p.m. ET — deals must be complete, not just reported, by then.
- Keep the Transactions feed filtered to Trades from about July 28 on — the pace accelerates all week.
- Run confirmed deals through the Trade Analyzer before accepting anyone's instant grade — including ours.
- Watch the sellers' call-ups — the prospects recalled on August 4 are the other half of every deadline story.
