MLB Playoff Bracket 2026 — Seeds, Schedule, and Who Has Clinched
The 2026 MLB postseason starts Tuesday, September 29, with all four wild card series opening the same day. Twelve teams make the field: six per league, three division winners and three wild cards. The top two seeds in each league skip the first round entirely.
Below is the bracket as it stands through September 13 — every seed, the full October schedule, who has already clinched, and what is still unsettled. Each team also carries its season NUT Score, the total production its hitters and pitchers have generated against league average. In the American League, the seeds and the production are pointing in almost opposite directions.
The 2026 MLB Playoff Bracket Today
Seeds 1 through 3 are the division winners, ordered by record. Seeds 4 through 6 are the wild cards. NUT values below are full-season.
AL wild card matchups: Cleveland at Houston and Boston at New York. Tampa Bay and Chicago wait in the Division Series.
NL wild card matchups: San Diego at Atlanta, plus Philadelphia and Chicago against each other. Those two are tied at 83-67, so which one hosts comes down to the head-to-head tiebreaker, not the standings page.
How the MLB Playoff Format Works
Six teams per league, four rounds, no reseeding after the wild card round. The rules that decide the bracket:
Seeds 1 and 2 get a bye. The two best division winners in each league skip the wild card round and open in the Division Series.
The 3 seed plays the 6 seed; the 4 seed plays the 5 seed.The third division winner is always seeded 3, even if a wild card team finished with more wins — which is exactly what has happened in the American League this year.
The higher seed hosts all three wild card games. There are no road games in the first round for the better seed, and no travel day inside the series.
Series lengths: best-of-three in the wild card round, best-of-five in the Division Series, best-of-seven in the League Championship Series and the World Series.

Who Has Clinched
Two teams are in: the Milwaukee Brewers and the Tampa Bay Rays, the first two clinchers of 2026. Milwaukee is also the best team in baseball by NUT at +14.0, and the only club in either league above +12.
Closest to joining them are the Los Angeles Dodgers, whose division magic number is down to 4, and the Atlanta Braves at 7. In the American League, both remaining division races are live: the White Sox and Astros each sit at 11, with Cleveland a half game behind Chicago and Texas a game behind Houston.
The American League Bracket Problem
The AL bracket is close to upside down. The New York Yankees are 86-63 and rank 3rd in baseball at +9.0 NUT. The Boston Red Sox are 82-68 and rank 4th at +8.5. As the 4 and 5 seeds, they play each other in the first round, and one of them is out by October 1.
Meanwhile the two teams sitting out that round are Tampa Bay at +5.8 and the Chicago White Sox at -1.5, ten games behind the Yankees in the standings and 11 spots behind them in production. The Yankees alone out-produce both bye teams combined, +9.0 to +4.3.
The 3 seed is stranger still. Houston is 75-75 at -3.8 NUT, 22nd of 30, and gets to host all three games against a Cleveland team 11 games better in the standings than its own record suggests it should be. Win a weak division and the bracket hands you home field over a 86-win club. That is the format working as designed, not a glitch — but it is why the AL seeds tell you almost nothing about who is dangerous.
The National League has the opposite shape. The 1 and 2 seeds, Milwaukee and Los Angeles, are also the 1 and 2 teams in baseball by NUT. The bracket and the production agree.
What Is Still Undecided
The final AL wild card. Cleveland holds it at 76-74. Toronto is one game back at 75-75, and Texas is two back at 74-76. By production it is not close in the way the standings suggest: Texas is 13th in baseball at +0.9 NUT, Cleveland 18th at -2.4, and Toronto 29th at -8.3. The Blue Jays are the least productive team in either league still alive.
The final NL wild card. San Diego holds it at 80-68 and has won six straight, the longest active streak in baseball — on a -2.0 NUT that ranks 17th. Arizona is two games back at 79-71 and ranks 27th at -6.8. Neither has been playing like a playoff team; one of them is going to be one.
The NL 4 and 5 seeds. Philadelphia and Chicago are tied at 83-67. The Cubs are the most lopsided team in the field: the best offense in baseball at +11.2 hitting NUT, dragged back by -6.1 on the mound. The Phillies are the mirror image, +5.3 pitching with a league-average bat.
