MLB Magic Numbers 2026 — Every Team’s Clinch Number, Graded by NUT
A magic number is the countdown to a clinch: any combination of wins by the leader and losses by the closest chaser that adds up to the number ends the race. Win one, subtract one. The team behind loses one, subtract one. At zero, the division is over.
The formula is simple: 163 minus the leader’s wins minus the chaser’s losses.An elimination number is the same countdown pointed the other way — how many chaser losses plus leader wins end that team’s season.
What a magic number can’t tell you is whether the lead is real. So every number below sits next to that team’s NUT Score — the production its hitters and pitchers have actually generated against league average — and its rank among all 30 clubs. All figures run through September 6.
Division Magic Numbers
Los Angeles owns the lowest magic number in baseball at 10, despite not having the best record — the NL West chaser is 10 games back, and a distant chaser shrinks the number faster than extra wins do. Milwaukee has the best record at 88-56 and a magic number of 12, because the Cubs are only 7 back.
Both are earned. The Brewers are 1st in MLB at +12.5 NUT and the only club above +6 on both sides of the ball; the Dodgers are 2nd at +10.6 on a +7.7 offense. These are the two clinches the underlying production agrees with.
The AL is where the numbers stop matching the play. Houston is counting down from 17 while ranking 20th in MLB at -3.1 NUT, held back by a -3.9 pitching NUT. Chicago leads the AL Central with a magic number of 18 and a -0.8 NUT, 14th— the only division leader in either league with negative production. Two of the six teams currently counting down to a division title have produced less than an average roster.
Who’s Already Eliminated
Three teams are out. The interesting one is San Francisco: eliminated at 59-85 while ranking 11th in baseball at +1.9 NUT, higher than eleven teams still alive. That is what a season of bad sequencing looks like — production that arrived in the wrong innings and the wrong games.
Four more clubs are within two of elimination: the Angels, Cincinnati, and Washington at 1, and Pittsburgh at 2.
The Elimination Number That Doesn’t Fit
Pittsburgh is two losses from elimination and third in all of baseball at +8.4 NUT— +5.0 from the bats, +3.4 from the arms. Only Milwaukee and Los Angeles have produced more. The Pirates are 71-73, 18th by record and 3rd by production, the largest such gap in the league in that direction.
The mirror image is Toronto: one game out of a wild card at 72-72 with the worst production in baseball, -9.9 NUT, 30th of 30. One team has three weeks left and nothing to show for a top-three roster; the other is a game from October on the least production in the sport.
Wild Card Elimination Numbers
Arizona holds the last NL wild card at 76-68 with an elimination number of 10 and a -7.6 NUT that ranks 27th — the weakest club in playoff position in either league, on a -6.2 pitching NUT. Miami chases it from four games back at 10th in MLB, out-producing the Diamondbacks by more than ten NUT.
In the AL, Cleveland holds the final spot at 73-71 and 19th in production. Minnesota (12th) and Texas (13th) both out-produce the Guardians from four and two games back, with elimination numbers of 15 and 17 — the two teams best positioned to take the spot if the standings catch up to the play.
How to Read a Magic Number
Three things worth knowing before you check one again.
1. A low magic number is about the chaser, not the leader.The Dodgers have a lower number than the Brewers with a worse record, because their nearest rival is 10 back and Milwaukee’s is 7. The number measures the gap, not the quality.
2. It moves two ways every night. A leader can sit idle and still see its number drop, if the chaser loses. On a day both play, the number can fall by two.
3. It says nothing about how good the team is. That is the whole reason for the NUT column above. Houston and Chicago are counting down to division titles on production that ranks 20th and 14th; Pittsburgh is being eliminated at 3rd. A magic number tells you what is about to happen. NUT tells you whether it should.
