2026 is the first full season of the automated ball-strike challenge system, and there is now enough data to say who is good at it. Through September 13, MLB teams have challenged 7,268 ball-strike calls and won 4,065of them — a 55.9% overturn rate. Challenged calls are wrong more often than they are right.

The Texas Rangers are the sharpest challengers in baseball at .635. The Baltimore Orioles are the worst at .482 — the only team that has lost more challenges than it has won. Here is every team, updated daily.

How the ABS Challenge System Works

Two challenges per team per game. A team that wins a challenge keeps it. Lose two and you are done challenging for the night.

Only the pitcher, catcher, or batter can call for one. Not the manager, not the dugout. The player has to signal immediately after the pitch.

Hawk-Eye tracking decides it. The system checks the pitch against the strike zone and the call stands or flips within seconds.

Extra innings reset the supply. A team entering extras without a challenge gets one per inning, though never more than one at a time unless it still had both.

That structure is why the leaderboard is a skill measure and not a volume measure. A challenge costs nothing if you are right, so the teams at the bottom are not unlucky — they are spending challenges on pitches that were called correctly.

Does Challenging More Often Make You Worse?

A little, but less than you would think. Across all 30 teams the correlation between how often a team challenges and how often it wins is -0.22— a real but weak pull. Teams that challenge a lot are slightly worse at it, and volume explains almost none of the spread.

The eight busiest teams (260 or more challenges) average .543. The six most selective (215 or fewer) average .565. That 22-point gap is smaller than the gap between the best and worst teams inside either group.

Which means the leaderboard is not measuring restraint. It is measuring whose pitcher, catcher, and batter know the zone.

The Outliers

Texas does both well

The Rangers have issued 200 challenges, third-fewest in baseball, and won 127 of them. Best rate in MLB on nearly the smallest sample. No other team is top five in both selectivity and accuracy.

The White Sox challenge everything

Chicago leads baseball with 309 challenges and has gone 154-155 on them. Roughly 100 more challenges than Texas, and 27 fewer overturns. A coin flip, all season.

Volume is not automatically bad

The Yankees (280 challenges, .586) and Marlins (276, .594) are both top-five in volume and top-11 in accuracy. They challenge constantly and are still right well above league average — the closest thing in the data to a genuine edge.

Baltimore is the only team underwater

The Orioles are 110-118 on the season, the lone club to lose more ball-strike challenges than it has won.
