A starting pitcher is credited with a win if he completes five innings, leaves with a lead, and his team never gives that lead back. Everything in that sentence after ‘five innings’ is out of his hands.

Two pitchers can throw the same game and finish 15-4 and 9-11, separated entirely by how many runs their offense scored on their start days. The stat has been fading from awards ballots for exactly this reason, and modern usage patterns — shorter starts, more relievers — have made it noisier still.

NUT ignores wins completely. It grades the pitcher on strikeouts, walks, and home runs across the innings he actually threw. When a pitcher’s win total and his NUT disagree, the win total is almost always the one describing his teammates.

What is a good W?

Wins are not used in NUT. A win depends on run support and bullpen work, neither of which the pitcher controls.
