HLD (Holds)
A hold is the setup man’s version of a save: come into a close game, get at least one out, and leave with the lead still standing. It is not an official MLB statistic, but it is tracked everywhere and it is a category in most fantasy leagues.
Like the save, it is bounded by role. The best reliever on a team often pitches the seventh or eighth in the highest-leverage spot and collects holds while a lesser arm collects saves in the ninth.
Judge relievers on rate stats and on NUT relative to other relievers. The hold total tells you how a manager used someone, which is worth knowing, but it is not a measure of how well he threw.
What is a good HLD?
Holds are not in NUT. A setup man’s NUT is built from the same three outcomes as everyone else’s, over a small innings total.
